Preventive Medicine
Clinical Practice of Dr. Chapdelaine
Dr. Chapdelaine is a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and is board certified in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He practices Preventive Medicine as well as complementary and alternative medicine. Preventive Medicine is a medical specialty that involves developing "strategies to assess risk factors, to promote health-enhancing behavior (primary prevention), to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury (seconday prevention), and to foster rehabilitation of persons with disabilities (tertiary prevention)." (Crowley AE, Etzes SI, editors: Directory of graduate medical education programs accredited by the accreditation council for graduate medical education, Chicago, 1989, American Medical Association)
As part of his practice, Dr. Chapdelaine incorporates a number of alternative, complementary modalities, proven effective clinically in studies throughout the world over the last several decades. Information about many of these can be found elsewhere in our website. Of special note are the following:
- Menopause, PMS, ovarian cysts, endometriosis: Dr. Chapdelaine agrees with Drs. Jonathan Wright, John Lee and others that natural progesterone and natural estrogens, not synthetic estrogen (Premarin® and others) and synthetic progesterone (Provera® and others), will solve most menopausal and PMS-related symptoms. There are other approaches as well, that can help with these conditions. Although menopause is a natural state, no woman should suffer from the symptoms that accompany these conditions! Not only are synthetic hormones often cancer-promoting, the side-effects often cause the very symptoms they are prescribed for. Further, it is progesterone that creates bone-mass, not estrogen, which most doctors do not realize. Dr. Chapdelaine uses salivary hormone tests, and occasionally urine tests, which reflect the true "active" state of the hormones in the body and are a convenient, less expensive way to monitor hormone fluctations.
- Mercury and other heavy metal environmental toxicity: The problem with mercury, especially so-called "silver" dental amalgams which are over 50% mercury, is becoming publically known, although the dangers have been known for over 150 years. Even tiny amounts of mercury are highly poisonous and can cause neurological and brain damage, organ destruction, and stop crucial endocrine production. There is excellent research linking mercury from dental, environmental and vaccine exposures to autism. Dr. Chapdelaine, and other practitioners across the country, are using metal chelation protocols developed by a consensus panel convened in Dallas, Texas in February, 2001. Proper testing before, during and after chelation is necessary for a safe outcome, as are nutritional supports and proper intestinal function. Chelating patients while they still have mercury dental amalgams in their mouths is dangerous unless the proper precautions are in place! Dr. Chapdelaine works with dentists in the Nashville area who are familiar with the correct and safe removal of mercury dental amalgams.
- Cancer patients: Dr. Chapdelaine works with cancer patients and their physicians to support their immune systems while undergoing immune-depressing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. He will also work with or refer patients who prefer to see physicians using highly successful alternative approaches to cancer treatment. This includes enhancing immune functions while fighting cancer, dietary evaluation and recommendations, special laboratory tests to determine the actual function and strength of natural killer cells and other cancer-fighting cells, vitamins and supplements with known therapeutic properties (from decades of clinical studies in Europe, Asia and the US), and special techniques for the emotional, social and spiritual issues common to cancer patients.
- Chronic Infections: Many chronic health problems are the result of overuse of antibiotics. Candidiasis is a common problem that results when antibiotics are used frequently, and the yeast itself can create symptoms that mimic many diseases, making it hard to detect unless the doctor thinks about it. Dr. Chapdelaine recommends natural substances whenever possible to treat common infections, both to avoid the toxicities and side-effects of standard anti-biotic and antifungal drugs, and to keep from depressing the body's natural immune system which most antibiotics themselves do. Since viral conditions don't respond to antibiotics, these require a different approach in any event.
- Chronic diseases: Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, chronic pain syndromes, endocrine imbalances (thyroid, adrenal, pancreatic, etc.) and many other conditions not well-controlled through drugs are treated by Dr. Chapdelaine using a variety of techniques. Not surprisingly, many of these are related to food and environmental allergies or sensitivities and simple lifestyle choices and habits.
- EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): Dr. Chapdelaine has taught people how to overcome lifelong phobias in as little as 10 minutes using this amazing energy technique! Not only phobias, but practically any negative emotion can be dealt with painlessly, quickly and permanently through EFT. Based on the discoveries of a prominent psychologist over a decade ago (Dr. Roger Callahan), EFT is the drug-free solution to many emotional problems encountered by all of us, whether stress, phobias, depression, anger, or post-traumatic-stress disorder. Dr. Chapdelaine is not actifvely teaching this technique (gently tapping on certain acupuncture points). He will direct his patients to the proper resources (see article on EFT) so they can use it on themselves. There are a few in this area using this, or variations, with patients and clients. It even helps with addictions!
